Circuit City Return Policy
2008-02-02 16:17:31
"I do not normally look at the back of my receipts, frankly, and neither does anyone else I know."
On December 18th, 2007, my husband purchased a very good Canon digital camera for our son for Christmas. Unfortunately, our son was less than thrilled, as he is not into photography at all. He did not want to hurt his dads feelings, however, so he did not say so. I encouraged him to return the camera and pick out something else instead. He finally decided in mid-January that what he would really like is some audio equipment for his car.
Imagine my shock when I called the Whitehall, PA store on January 18th and found out that digital cameras and computers cannot be return after 14 days (or January 8th for Christmas gifts). I truly thought the store manager was joking. He said the policy is stated on the back of the receipt, and sure enough it is. What I would like to know, however, is why the policy is not printed on the front of the receipt, and why it is not posted in the store where nobody can miss it, and why the sales clerks do not communicate the policy to the buyers. I do not normally look at the back of my receipts, frankly, and neither does anyone else I know. If the information is important, it should be printed on the front AND it should be plastered all over the store so that consumers are aware of the policy before they buy.
I told the manager that we do not want the camera but we would be willing to exchange it for audio equipment, but he was adamant that we could not return the camera unless there was something wrong with it and then we could only exchange it for another camera.
Since I have never heard of such a narrow return window, I decided to call around to other stores to see if two weeks is indeed the industry standard, as the store manager claimed. First, I called Best Buy and was told that I could return a digital camera until the end of January. Then I called K-Mart and was told that I could return a digital camera for 90 days. Ergo, Circuit Citys two-week policy is absurd, and the store manager is a liar.

[editor's note: At electronic and Office stores around here, 14 days return for electronics is fairly common]
