Is Staples Extended Warranty Worth it?
2008-02-22 16:55:27
"it really isnt worth buying an extended warranty at Staples and that, with a couple of notable exceptions, the service is absolutely atrocious"
Hello all! I made the BIIIGG mistake of purchasing an extended warranty, from Staples, for my HP laptop. Well, over 2 MONTHS ago (Dec.17 2007) I took it in to have the DVD burner fixed. Well, they determined that it was covered under the terms of the warranty an off it went! So I waited.. and waited... and waited.. and, finally, on Jan. 7/08 I received a call informing me that theyd received the wrong part and it would be another 5 days till Id get my (repaired) unit back. Nothing doing; after repeatedly calling the warranty centre (and being told many a spurious story), I was told that the part was there (02/07/08) and would be instaled then shipped back. A week goes by and (getting antsy now), I call again to find out whats happening. Turns out they had the wrong part AGAIN! I phoned head office in Ontario, where a really helpful customer service representative promised to help me out; she agreed that the delay was unacceptable. She then contacted the call centre in Quebec and the supervisor then contacted me. He agreed that this whole affair had gone on way too long and promised that the whole business would definitely be resolved by Tues. feb 19th, and that he would definitely call me on tues. he also said hed send me a $100 Staples gift certificate for my troubles (as of this post I havent received a single thing). Well, 5 days later and no phone call, no computer, no service. I called the call centre in Quebec and was told that the part had arrived at the service depot and my computer was on the bench. Okayyy.. I figured that Id wait a day, but left a voice-mail message with the supervisor informing him about the delay and his inability to live up to his promises (though not so bluntly worded). The next day I phoned back and was informed that the part had just arrived at the service depot! Imagine that.. lied to again! Decided to phone the head office again (direct line this time to the helpful woman Id talked to before), where my further news was met with dismay. She then phoned the call centre and the supervisor reeled off his excuses and promised to call me today before 12:00 PM (02/22/08) and clear things up (he had some VERY important meetings to attend and couldnt talk with me that day.. yeah right.) Anyway, I sat around and waited.. and waited.. and 12:00 rolls around and no call. Getting frustrated, I call the warranty centre and ask about the progress of the repair. Evidently, its been fixed and will be at the store by next mon/tues. Well, I wont be holding my breath.
Anyway, the whole upshot of this nasty experience is that it really isnt worth buying an extended warranty at Staples and that, with a couple of notable exceptions, the service is absolutely atrocious. Its bad enough being put on the back-burner, but being lied to as well really makes for an unpleasant experience. Due to my slow (hunt and peck) typing and less than perfect memory, I havent detailed all the calls Ive made or the times Ive been to the Staples store here and, aside from venting a bit of spleen, obtained printouts detailing some of the misadventures with my laptop. Bottom line: Staples doesnt care and dont waste your money. ..Willy.
